Tap - Tap (English spelling)

A tool used to cut female threads into the inner surface of a hole. The tool has several grooves like male threads on its outer circumference, and a cutting edge is attached. The tip of the tap is tapered (slightly inclined) to make it easier to bite into the workpiece. There are equal diameter taps and increasing diameter taps. Other types of taps include nut taps used to cut female threads into nuts with machines, pipe taps used to thread water pipes, gas pipes, etc., and spiral taps with right-twisted grooves to facilitate the removal of cutting chips.

穴の内面に雌ねじを切るための工具。工具の外周に数条の雄ねじのような溝を設けて、切刃(きれは)をつけてある。タップの先端部は工作物に食いつきやすくするために、テーパー状（わずかに傾斜をつけること）に落としてある。タップには等径タップと増径タップがある。このほか、機械でナットの雌ねじを切るためのナットタップ、水道管やガス管などのねじ切りを行うための管用(くだよう)タップ、切屑(きりくず)の排出をよくするために、溝を右ねじりにしたスパイラルタップなどがある。
