Boat-billed heron (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒロハシサギ(広嘴鷺) - ヒロハシサギ（英語表記）boat‐billed heron

A bird of the Heronidae family in the order Ciconiiformes. Total length is about 50 cm. At first glance it resembles a night heron, but it has a large, wide beak. The forehead, face, and neck are white, while the head, crest, and hind neck are black. The back below the back is gray, the underside below the chest is chestnut brown, and the sides are black. Young birds are mostly reddish brown. It is distributed from Mexico to northern Argentina, and lives in lush mangrove forests on riverbanks and lagoons. It is nocturnal, usually resting during the day and coming out in the evening to forage in wetlands and waterside areas. Its diet consists mainly of small shrimp, small fish, and aquatic insects.

コウノトリ目サギ科の鳥。全長約50cm。一見ゴイサギに似ているが，大きく幅の広いくちばしが特徴。額，顔，くびは白く，頭上，冠羽，後頸（こうけい）は黒い。背以下の背面は灰色，胸以下の下面は栗色で，わきは黒色である。幼鳥は赤褐色に富む。メキシコからアルゼンチン北部まで分布し，川岸や潟湖のよく茂ったマングローブ林などにすんでいる。習性は夜行性で，昼間はふつう休み，夕方出て，湿地や水辺で餌をあさる。食物は主として小エビ，小魚，水生昆虫である。
