United Nations Children's Fund. A permanent subsidiary body of the United Nations Economic and Social Council that provides assistance for child welfare programs in developing countries. Founded in 1946 as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to provide relief to children in war-torn countries. It later expanded its activities to include not only war-torn countries but also developing countries. It changed its name to its current one in 1953, but retained the abbreviation UNICEF.
