"Auspicious Trials" - Kichijiryakugi

In ancient and medieval times, the most formal funeral was to place the body at a cremation site and place the remains in a separate tomb, and only the emperor and his close relatives were allowed to do so officially. The Kiji Ryakugi (late 12th century), which records the funeral procedures for emperors, retired emperors, and empresses, describes how to pile up earth on a cremation site after removing the facilities at the cremation site, erect a stone stupa, set up nail-piercing gates, and dig a ditch on all four sides. In the Nara period, Emperor Gensho forbade his own lavish funeral and issued an edict that the cremation site and burial site should not be separated, which suggests that this type of funeral method did exist (Shoku Nihongi, October 13, 5th year of the Yoro era).
