Akazomeemon - Akazomeemon

Japanese:
Akazomeemon - Akazomeemon

Dates of birth and death unknown. A female poet of the mid-Heian period and one of the Thirty-six Immortal Poets of the Middle Ages. Daughter of Uemon-no-jo Akasome Tokimochi. However, since she was born after Taira Kanemori's wife remarried Tokimochi, it is also said that she was Kanemori's daughter (Fukuro-soshi). After a love affair with Oe Tamemoto, she married his cousin Oe Masahira, and had children Takachika and Go no Jiju. She served Kanpaku Michinaga's wife Rinshi and her daughter Jotomon-in Shoshi, and was also friends with Sei Shonagon, Izumi Shikibu, and Murasaki Shikibu. In 1001 (Choho 3) and again in 1009 (Kanko 6), she went down to her appointed province of Owari with her husband. She was highly praised as a good wife and mother, and her personality is conveyed in the "Murasaki Shikibu Diary." As a poet, she wrote "Gojugoban Utaawase" and "Takatsukasadono Noriko no Shichijuu Byobu Uta." She was also active in the "Kanpaku Sadaijin Yorimichi Utaawase" in 1035 (Chogen 8), and was known for her gentle and elegant style of poetry, such as "I sleep peacefully, but I look at the moon until it becomes too late." In 1041 (Chokyu 2), she wrote a poem celebrating the birth of her great-grandson Masafusa, and it seems that she died shortly thereafter at the age of about 80. There are two versions of the Akasomemonshu, one in vogue and one variant, of the family anthology. The former is a miscellaneous, self-selected edition arranged roughly chronologically, while the latter is a similar anthology compiled by others.
