Nanyue Huaijo - Nanyue Huaijo

Japanese: 南岳懐譲 - なんがくえじょう
Nanyue Huaijo - Nanyue Huaijo

A Zen monk in the early Tang Dynasty in China. His posthumous name was Zen Master Daie. He was from Jinzhou (Shandong Province) and is said to have had a miraculous event at the time of his birth. At the age of 15, he became a monk under Master Hongjing (634-712) of the Gyokusen Temple in Jingzhou (Hubei Province) and studied the Vinaya. He visited Huian on Mount Songshan and attained enlightenment. He then went to Caoxi and studied under the sixth Zen patriarch, Huineng, and inherited the teachings. In 713 (Senten 2), he lived at the Prajna Temple on Nanyue. During the Kaiyuan era (713-741), Mazu Daoyi succeeded him, and his lineage later flourished in Jiangxi and later developed into the Linji and Huigyo sects. His lineage, along with that of Seigengyosi (the sixth patriarch Huineng - Sekitou Xichan - Seigengyosi), is an important part of the Southern Zen sect, which is the mainstream of Chinese Zen. He died on August 11, 744 (Tianbao 3). His writings include the one-volume "Sayings of Zen Master Nanyue Dahui."
