Inoue Yachiyo

Japanese: 井上八千代 - いのうえやちよ

Head of the Inoue school of Kyomai.

First World

(1767-1854) Sato, the younger sister of the Confucian scholar Keisuke Inoue. She excelled in dancing and received the Ibishi crest from the Konoe family she served. She took the name Yachiyo and became the founder of a school of her own.

II

(1790-1868) She was the niece of the first Inoue, and later adopted. She built the foundations of the Inoue school by incorporating elements of Kongo-ryu Noh dance, Bunraku puppet theatre, and Kabuki.

(1838-1938) A disciple of the second. Wife of the 6th Noh master Katayama Kuroemon, her real name was Katayama Haruko. Even after succeeding the 3rd Yachiyo, she continued to use her real name until her later years. Influenced by the Kanze school of Noh, she also incorporated a wider range of elements from Bunraku puppet theater and Kabuki, and added a variety of works other than jiuta (Chinese folk songs). She also taught Gion Shinchi dance, and choreographed the Miyako Odori dance for the entertainment at the 1872 (Meiji 5) exhibition, solidifying her ties with Gion.

(1905-2004), a disciple of the third-generation Inoue. She was the wife of the third-generation Inoue's grandson, Hiromichi Katayama (1907-1963), and her real name was Aiko Inoue. She inherited the artistic talent of her predecessor, and her dance is outstandingly standardized and powerful. She has choreographed over 100 pieces. In 1955 (Showa 30), she was recognized as a holder of an Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure). In 1975, she was awarded the Person of Cultural Merit, and in 1990 (Heisei 2), she was awarded the Order of Culture. In May 2000 (Heisei 12), she handed over the reins of the school to her granddaughter, Michiko Inoue, and took the name Aiko Inoue.

She is the grandson of the 4th generation (1956- ). Her former name was Inoue Michiko. Her father was Katayama Kuroemon IX (1930-2015), and her husband was Kanze Tetsunojo IX, whose real name was Kanze Michiko. In 1999, she received the Minister of Education's Art Encouragement Prize and the Japan Art Academy Prize. In 2013, she was awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon, and in 2015, she was recognized as a Living National Treasure.

初世

（1767―1854）儒者井上敬助の妹サト。舞に優れ、仕えていた近衛(このえ)家から井菱(いびし)の紋を受け、八千代と名のり流祖となる。

2世

（1790―1868）初世の姪(めい)アヤで、のち養女。能の金剛(こんごう)流の舞、人形浄瑠璃(じょうるり)の人形、歌舞伎(かぶき)からも摂取し井上流の基礎を固めた。

3世

（1838―1938）2世の門弟。能の6世片山九郎右衛門(くろうえもん)の妻で本名片山春子。3世八千代を継承した後も、晩年まで本名で通していた。能観世流の影響を受け、人形浄瑠璃や歌舞伎からもさらに広く取り入れ、地唄(じうた)以外の作品も種々加えた。祇園(ぎおん)新地の舞の指導も行い、1872年（明治5）に行われた博覧会の余興の「都をどり」を振り付け、祇園との結び付きを固めた。

4世

（1905―2004）3世の門弟。3世の孫片山博道（1907―1963）の妻で本名片山愛子。先代譲りの芸格を備え、規格正しく迫力ある舞が抜群。振付け作品数も100曲を超す。1955年（昭和30）重要無形文化財保持者（人間国宝）の認定を受ける。1975年文化功労者、1990年（平成2）文化勲章受章。2000年（平成12）5月に家元を孫の井上三千子(みちこ)に譲ったのち、井上愛子を名のる。
