When a ferromagnetic material of finite size is placed in a magnetic field and magnetized, a magnetic field in the opposite direction appears inside the material due to the magnetic poles created at both ends of the material as a result of the magnetization. The strength of the demagnetizing field Hd is proportional to the strength of magnetization M and can be written as Hd = NM / μ0 , where μ0 is the magnetic permeability of a vacuum and N is a proportionality constant called the demagnetizing factor.
