A general term for animals in the genus Pronolagus, family Leporidae, order Lagomorpha, class Mammalia. They inhabit rocky areas from South Africa to Kenya. Rabbits in this genus Pronolagus are divided into 3 to 9 species by researchers. They are 35 to 50 centimeters long and have tails that are 5 to 10 centimeters longer than European rabbits. They are so named because of their reddish fur. They are closer to European rabbits than to hares, but are often referred to as red hares. Many rabbits do not make noises, but this genus makes a high-pitched cry when it senses danger. They are like "living fossils" that belong to the subfamily Leporinae, along with the Amami rabbit and the Mexican rabbit.
