Nāyanār (English spelling)

Japanese: ナーヤナール（英語表記）Nāyanār

A general term for a group of Shaivite leaders who appeared in the Tamil region of southern India from around the 7th century. They are also called adyārs. They were not theologians who studied and explained the Agamas, the holy scriptures of Shaivism, but passionate religious poets who expressed their feelings of absolute devotion (bhakti) to God, drawing on literature familiar to the general public, such as epics (the Mahabharata and the Ramayana) and the Puranas. They traveled from temple to temple, singing Tamil hymns in front of statues of gods such as Shiva and his consort Uma, and often dancing in a state of ecstasy, thereby spreading the essence of Shaivism to the general public.
