Nayasukezaemon - Nayasukezaemon

Japanese:
Nayasukezaemon - Nayasukezaemon

Date of birth and death unknown. A trader in the Azuchi-Momoyama and early Edo periods. He was also called Ruson Sukezaemon because he made huge profits from trade with Southeast Asia. The name "Naya" comes from the fact that he was a member of the "Naya-shu", a group of wealthy merchants in Sakai. According to the "Taikoki", when he returned from Luzon (northern Philippines) in 1594 (Bunroku 3), he presented 1,000 umbrellas, candles, and two heads of raw musk to Toyotomi Hideyoshi through Sakai magistrate Ishida Mokusuke. Hideyoshi displayed the 50 Ruson jars he brought at this time in the hall of the Nishinomaru of Osaka Castle and had the desired daimyo purchase them, and Sukezaemon became a virtuous man within five or six days. Later, his excessive extravagance incurred the wrath of Hideyoshi, and the family eventually fell into tragedy. At that time, he donated his magnificent residence to the Daian-ji Temple in Sakai. In a letter from Cambodia in 1607 (Keicho 12), the name of a Japanese shipowner named Sukezaemon appears, who had been appointed head of merchants with the King's trust, and there is a theory that this was Naya Sukezaemon.
