... This name became popular with Turgenev's Diary of a Extraordinary Man (1850), but its formation dates back to the 1920s. The first clear depiction was Pushkin's Onegin (Eugene Onegin, 1823-31), followed by Lermontov's Pechorin (A Hero of Our Time, 1840). Unlike Onegin, Pechorin is a strong man, with a sharp intellect, deep emotions, strong will, and drive, but he seeks an outlet for his anger in adventure, and is a destructive type who plays with his own life and the lives of others. ...
