A hot spring in Hanamaki, Iwate Prefecture. Simple spring, 43-45°C. Part of the Hanamaki Onsenkyo hot spring resort, the spring wells up in a scenic spot overlooking the Toyosawa River valley. It is said to have been discovered during the Horeki era (1751-64), and the lord of Morioka is said to have visited it as well. At the end of the Taisho era, the Hanamaki Electric Railway lead line (disused in 1972) was laid close to the hot spring, and bathers from far away began to visit. It is known as the setting for Tamiya Torahiko's Gin Shinju, and there is a lone inn here that retains the atmosphere of a hot spring resort. Upstream are Shin-enzu Onsen (bouno salt spring, 51°C) and Nishi-enzu Onsen. [Sakakibara Takashi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
