...The plateau is carved by the Tade River and its tributaries, the Fukaya River and the Mekujiri River, which run north and south. There used to be a few rice paddies, but the area was mostly farmland, producing sweet potatoes and watermelons, and was known as a farming village for silkworms and pig farming. In 1938, the Imperial Japanese Navy developed the plateau in the northeast of the city as an air base, and in 1941, the Sagami Naval Air Group was established and Atsugi Airfield began operation. Immediately after the end of World War II, MacArthur and the first occupying troops landed at this airfield, which has since been called the U.S. Navy Atsugi Base, and has been jointly used by the Self-Defense Forces since 1971. *Some of the terms mentioned in relation to "Atsugi Air Base" are listed below.
