Albert Namatjira

Australian painter. He was of Aranda Aboriginal (Australian indigenous) descent. Born at Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia, he became a farm boy and later made and sold handicrafts. In 1934, the watercolorist Rex Battersby stopped by the mission and gave Namatjira paints and paper, which prompted him to become his apprentice. In 1938 he held a solo exhibition in Melbourne. Since then he has been known and highly acclaimed throughout the country. His style of painting, which uses a lot of purple in watercolors of central Australian landscapes, gave rise to his son and other followers, and is known to this day as the Aranda School.

オーストラリアの画家。アボリジニー(オーストラリア先住民)のアランダ族出身。中央部のハーマンズバーグ伝道所に生まれ，牧童となり，のちに民芸品をつくって売った。1934年水彩画家レックス･バタービーが同伝道所に立ち寄り，ナマジラは絵具と画用紙を与えられたのがきっかけで彼に弟子入りし，38年メルボルンで個展を開いた。以後全国に知られ，高く評価された。オーストラリア中央部の風景を紫を多用した水彩画に仕上げる画風は，彼の息子とその他の亜流を生み，アランダ派と呼ばれて今日に至っている。
