1902‐59 Australian painter. He was of Aranda Aboriginal (Australian indigenous) descent. Born at Hermannsburg Mission in central Australia, he became a farm boy and later made and sold handicrafts. In 1934, the watercolorist Rex Battersby stopped by the mission and gave Namatjira paints and paper, which prompted him to become his apprentice. In 1938 he held a solo exhibition in Melbourne. Since then he has been known and highly acclaimed throughout the country. His style of painting, which uses a lot of purple in watercolors of central Australian landscapes, gave rise to his son and other followers, and is known to this day as the Aranda School.
