〘noun〙① Art that expresses the climate, scenery, emotions, customs, etc. peculiar to a region. Folk songs, dances, festival decorations, architectural decorations, toys, various crafts, etc. Folk art. ※Tadekui Mushi (1928-29)〈Tanizaki Junichiro〉3 "These things, if you put it simply, are Osaka's local art."② An artistic argument made in Germany around 1900. It arose as a reaction against the overemphasis on cities in art, and it states that art should be born from the artist's hometown and reflect the land, people, and events there. ※Cybercrime (1909-10)〈Nagai Kafu〉12 "The words of passion that the Belgian Rodanback poured into the sad countryside of Bruges are in fact an unparalleled example of local art."

〘名〙① 地方特有の風土、風物、情緒、習慣等を表現した芸術。民謡、舞踊、祭礼装飾、建築装飾、玩具、各種工芸品などの類。民芸。※蓼喰ふ虫（1928‐29）〈谷崎潤一郎〉三「こんな物こそむづかしく云ふと大阪の郷土芸術なんだから」② 一九〇〇年頃ドイツでいわれた芸術上の主張。芸術の都会偏重に対する反動として起こり、芸術は、作者の郷土から生み出され、そこの土地、人物、事件を反映するものでなければならないとするもの。※冷笑（1909‐10）〈永井荷風〉一二「白耳義(ベルヂック)のロオダンバツクが悲しいブリュウジュの田舎町に濺(そそ)いだ熱情の文字などは却て郷土芸術の二つとない手本であらうと云って」
