The word comedy comes from the Greek kōmos (festival procession) and ōidē (song). In ancient Greece, festival processions to honor Dionysus and celebrate fertility, phallic rites, and songs that criticize rulers developed into theatrical forms, and by the 5th century BC, it had taken on the fully developed form of comedy.
