Inuzansho - Inuzansho

Japanese: イヌザンショウ - いぬざんしょう
Inuzansho - Inuzansho
A deciduous shrub of the Rutaceae family that grows wild in the mountains and fields, completely hairless (illustration). It looks similar to Japanese pepper, but has an unpleasant odor and can be distinguished by the fact that the thorns on the twigs are spaced apart rather than opposite each other. The leaves are alternate and odd-pinnately compound. There are 13 to 21 leaflets, opposite or slightly opposite, papery, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 1.5 to 3.5 cm long, with small serrated edges. The leaf rachis has narrow wings. Dioecious. In summer, corymbs 3 to 8 cm long appear at the ends of the branches, bearing numerous greenish-green florets.
