The ruins of an ancient city on the right bank of the Euphrates River in eastern Syria. In Greek, it is called Doura Europos. It was a fortress city founded by Seleucus I around 300 BCE. During the Hellenistic period, it was merely a military city, but after the Parthians occupied it around 100 BCE, it developed as a transit point for East-West trade, and benefited greatly from the development of Palmyra in particular. It came under Roman control in 165 A.D., and was sacked by the Sassanid Empire in 256, ending its history as a city. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
