Dura Europos (English spelling)

The ruins of an ancient city on the right bank of the Euphrates River in eastern Syria. In Greek, it is called Doura Europos. It was a fortress city founded by Seleucus I around 300 BCE. During the Hellenistic period, it was merely a military city, but after the Parthians occupied it around 100 BCE, it developed as a transit point for East-West trade, and benefited greatly from the development of Palmyra in particular. It came under Roman control in 165 A.D., and was sacked by the Sassanid Empire in 256, ending its history as a city.

シリア東部，ユーフラテス川右岸にある古代都市遺跡。ギリシア語ではドゥラ･エウロポスDoura Eurōpos。前300年ころ，セレウコス1世によって建設された要塞都市で，ヘレニズム時代は軍事都市にすぎなかったが，パルティア人が同市を占領した前100年ころから東西交易の中継基地として発展し，とくにパルミュラの発展により大きな恩恵を受けた。紀元後165年ローマ軍の支配するところとなり，256年ササン朝によって略奪され，都市としての歴史を終わる。
