Nakamura Teijo

Haiku poet. Born in Kumamoto City. Maiden name: Saito. Real name: Hamako. Graduated from Kumamoto Prefectural Girls' High School. Started composing haiku at the end of 1918 (Taisho 7). Married Nakamura Shigeki in 1920. Moved around various places, including Tokyo, Sendai, and Nagoya, where her husband, a tax official, was posted, before returning to Tokyo. During this time she had been absent from haiku writing due to housework, but returned in 1932 (Showa 7). Visited Takahama Kyoshi, and in 1934 became a member of the magazine Hototogisu. She is considered on a par with Hoshino Tatsuko. In April 1947 (Showa 22), she launched the magazine Kazahana. She was well-known for her poetry that depicted family life and expressed the feelings of women, and for her guidance on broadcasts. She has written many books, including Teijyo Kushu (1946). In 1980, she was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit.

俳人。熊本市に生まれる。旧姓斎藤。本名破魔子(はまこ)。熊本県立高等女学校卒業。1918年（大正7）末より句作、1920年中村重喜と結婚、税務官吏の夫の任地東京、仙台、名古屋など転々、のち東京に帰る。この間家事などで離れていた句作に1932年（昭和7）復帰、高浜虚子(きょし)を訪ね、1934年『ホトトギス』同人。星野立子(たつこ)と並び称せられる。1947年（昭和22）4月『風花(かざはな)』を創刊。家庭生活を写し女性の心情を詠嘆し、また放送での指導で親しまれた。『汀女句集』（1946）ほか著書多数。1980年文化功労者。
