When melting and smelting metal materials to produce a specific shape, the raw metal is formed into an electrode of an appropriate size. This is the opposite of a non-consumable electrode. In furnaces that use non-consumable electrodes, the melting and smelting of metals is carried out using only Joule heat (electrical resistance heat) or arc heat generated between the electrodes. In contrast, in furnaces that use consumable electrodes, the electrodes themselves are melted using Joule heat or arc heat generated between the electrodes, and are consumed in the smelting process.
