It is the language of the Itelmen people living in the Tigir District of the Koryak Autonomous Okrug in the western part of the Kamchatka Peninsula in the Russian Federation, and belongs to the Chukchi-Kamchadal group of Old Asiatic languages. It calls itself Itelmen, but has also been called Kamchadal (Камчадал/Kamchadal). It has become increasingly Russified, and only about 100 people (1989) speak Itelmen out of a population of 2,429 (1989). Nouns are divided into animate and inanimate, with animate nouns changing into 7 cases and inanimate nouns changing into 8 cases. Verbs change into either the objective conjugation with an object or the subject conjugation without an object. watš-anke "to the stone", t-antsp-tseʔn "I teach them".
