Nobuhide Oda

Japanese:
Nobuhide Oda

A military commander in the Sengoku period. Born in Owari Province (Aichi Prefecture). Son of Nobusada, father of Nobunaga. He was originally called Danjochu, and later changed his name to Bingo no Kami. He was one of the three magistrates of Owari Province, along with Oda Yamatonokami Toshisada of Kiyosu, who was the deputy governor of Owari Province, and was originally based in Shobata Castle. At the time, the Oda clan was dominated by the deputy governor of Kiyosu and Oda Ise no Kami of Iwakura Castle, who were competing for influence over half of Owari Province. Meanwhile, the power of the three magistrates grew, and Nobuhide eventually surpassed his lord's family, gradually expanding his influence as he moved his castle to Nagoya, Furuwatari, and Suemori. In 1542 (Tenbun 11), he fought against Imagawa Yoshimoto of Suruga at Azukizaka, and then against Saito Dosan of Mino, attempting to block the advance of both forces into Owari. However, in 1544, he was defeated by the Saito clan and fled, but he eventually married Dosan's daughter Nohime to his son Nobunaga and made peace with him. Thus, although Nobuhide actively fought against enemies abroad, he was unable to completely defeat domestic forces. However, it can be said that he built the foundation for Nobunaga's rise to power. He also valued tradition and authority, and actively approached the central authorities, such as by donating 700 kan of coins to the Outer Shrine of Ise and 4,000 kan as repair fees for the Imperial Palace grounds, which resulted in Emperor Gonara bestowing a decree and the Kokinshu. He died on March 3, 1553, at Suemori Castle. His posthumous name was Togen Doken, and his grave is at Banshoji Temple (Naka-ku, Nagoya). There are also theories that he died in 1555 or 1556.
