Tenjin Festival - Tenjin Festival
This is the annual festival of Tenmangu Shrine, located in Tenjinbashi, Kita-ku, Osaka City, Osaka Prefecture. It is held every year on July 24th and 25th. During the Muromachi period, the festival was held on July 7th of the lunar calendar, but during the Edo period, it began to be held on June 24th and 25th of the lunar calendar. According to the shrine's legend, it began on June 1st or on the last day of June in the 5th year of the Tenryaku era (951), when a spear was floated from the beach in front of the shrine and washed up, where it was purified, and the people of the shrine's domain sent out boats to welcome it. On the morning of the 24th, following the Nagoshi-no-harai ritual, a child prodigy selected from local elementary school students floats the sacred spear down the river in the Hoko-nagare ritual, which reenacts this original legend and is known as the event that marks the start of the Tenjin Festival. The main festival is held on the 25th, and begins at about 3:30 pm when the sacred floats and phoenix palanquins are carried from the shrine to Tenjinbashi Bridge on the Okawa River (formerly the Yodo River) in a land parade led by men wearing crimson hoods playing the drums of Moyooshidaiko. From Tenjinbashi, the parade heads upstream and meets the worship boats of the shrine parishioners that have departed from the upstream to the downstream. At about 7 pm, the boat parade takes place. The original boat parade headed downstream to the Otabisho shrine, and the worship boats would welcome them. The parade of the phoenix palanquin is a lively event, but it is also accompanied by floats playing lively danjiri bayashi music, lion dances, and umbrella dance offerings. Also, from the Genroku period (1688-1704), welcoming dolls such as warrior dolls displayed on worship ships became a highlight, and even today, when they are no longer displayed on ships, the dolls are still exhibited separately.
