It is also called "preparation," "battle preparation," or "battle method." The term "battle method" is found in the "Nihon Shoki" (Chronicles of Japan), in the article on November 12th year of the Tenmu era, "Dinghai," about training in battle methods in various provinces, and there are also instances of battle methods being taught in the Nara and early Heian periods. In ancient times, battle methods were Chinese, as is known from the November 760 (Tenpyo Houji 4) when six people, including the sword-granting chamberlain Kasukabe Sanseki, were sent to Dazaifu to learn Zhuge Liang's "Eight Battles," Sun Tzu's "Nine Places," and "Management's Battle." The influence of such Chinese battle methods was evident throughout the Middle Ages, and it is said that the Takeda clan of Kai created the "Eight Battles" battle method during the Warring States period, and many drawings of battle methods were created during the Edo period.
