...Light industries such as tea and cotton processing, soap and oil refining were located here, and it is said that Paragyotishapura, the capital of the Kamarupa Kingdom, which flourished in Assam during the Maurya and Kushan dynasties from the 4th century BC to the 3rd century AD, was located here. The Kamakhya Temple, dedicated to the god Shiva, is located on the Nilachal Hill, 3 km southwest, and attracts Hindu pilgrims from all over India. The Ashava-Kurantha Hill on the north bank is also said to be the place where the god Krishna fought against Nanakasura.
