A village in Minamiamabe County in the southeastern part of Oita Prefecture. Population 3,081 (1995). Occupying a corner of the Kyushu Mountains, the Kurusu River, a tributary of the Banjo River, flows north through the center of the village. It borders Saiki City to the east and Miyazaki Prefecture to the south. It is a key route connecting Bungo and Hyuga, and the Nippo Main Line and National Route 10 still pass through the town. The center of the village is Akagi around Naokawa Station. Rice is the main crop, but the village also grows flowers and pigs. As most of the village area is covered by forests, the village produces high-quality cedar and cypress timber and shiitake mushrooms. There are many stone pillars and pagodas from the Middle Ages, especially in Akagi, so the village is known as the "Village of Stone Towers," and many people visit.
