Troponin C is a protein that controls muscle contraction and consists of three components (C, T, and I). Troponin C is a calcium-binding protein (molecular weight 18,000) that binds to the actin filaments that make up muscle protein, and there are 24 troponin C molecules on one actin filament. Troponin T (molecular weight 37,000) binds to tropomyosin. Troponin I (molecular weight 24,000) inhibits the interaction between actin and myosin. When these three components bind and absorb calcium released from the endoplasmic reticulum, the actin and myosin contained in the myofibril react, causing muscle contraction, and when the endoplasmic reticulum reabsorbs calcium, the muscle becomes relaxed. It was discovered by Setsuro Ebashi in 1965.
