This is the head temple of the Nichiren sect, located in Honpoji-mae-cho, Kamigyo-ku, Kyoto City. Founded by Nisshin in 1436 (Eikyō 8), it was originally located in Higashinotoin Ayako-ji, but Nisshin was imprisoned and the temple was destroyed for violating the taboo of Ashikaga Yoshimitsu. Word of the temple reached the ears of Emperor Gohanazono, who granted him government land in Shijo Takakura in 1455 (Kōshō 1) and rebuilt it, but five years later, it was demolished again at the request of Tofuku-ji Temple and moved to Sanjo Manri-koji. In 1587 (Tenshō 15), during the reign of the 10th abbot Nittsu, the temple was relocated to its current location due to Toyotomi Hideyoshi's land readjustment. After that, it was protected by successive generations of the Kii Tokugawa family, and the Honami family also provided patronage as a place of repose for the deceased. The plaque in front of the main hall, "Honpoji Temple," was written by Koetsu, and the Tomoe Garden was also designed by Koetsu. The temple houses many excellent works of art from the early modern period. [Endo Asai] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
