Uirouri - Uirouri
Kabuki kyogen. One of the 18 major Kabuki plays. Also refers to the roles that appear in Kabuki. First performed in January 1716 (Kyoho 3) at the Morita-za in Edo as Wakamidori Ikioisogata by Ichikawa Danjūrō II. This is a stage adaptation of the customs of selling Uiro, a medicine famous in Odawara. The medicine's speech became popular and became the subject of a comic story, featuring long lines that consisted mainly of tongue twisters. At the end of the Edo period, he only made an appearance in Sukeroku. Ichikawa Misao 5 (10th Danjūrō), Ichikawa Ebizō 9 (11th Danjūrō), and Ebizō 10 (12th Danjūrō) each performed it as a one-act play with a different script.
