A former town in Kawanabe County, southwest of the Satsuma Peninsula in Kagoshima Prefecture. Tea cultivation is thriving, and early rice cultivation is practiced. Ponkan oranges are a specialty. The coast is a large reclaimed land. Kamegaoka is a scenic spot overlooking Fukiagehama Beach. In November 2005, Minamisatsuma merged with Kaseda City, Kasasa Town in Kawanabe County, Bozu Town in Kawanabe County, and Kinpo Town in Hioki County to become a city. 38.19 km2 . 2,957 people (2003).
