1882‐1949 A Finnish religious folklorist, he was a talented student of K. Krohn. Until 1927 he went by the name Holmberg. After graduating from theology, he first became a pastor, but then returned to university to study under Krohn and Setala. After receiving his doctorate, he became a lecturer in Finno-Ugric religious studies at the University of Helsinki, and eventually a professor of sociology at the University of Turku, a position he held until the end of his life. While learning from Krohn's methods, he pioneered his own field, and is known for his extensive research, particularly in the field of "folk beliefs," which he conducted by drawing on a vast amount of material.
