Permian shale rich in heavy metals found in central Europe, including Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom. It is rich in many metals, including copper, lead, zinc, and silver, but is mainly mined for copper. It averages 30-50 cm thick. It covers an area of 600,000 km2 , but only 1% of it contains more than 0.3% copper, and only 0.2% has a content large enough to be mined as ore (2-3% copper or more). The deposits are mainly found in Germany and Poland, and the Mansfeld region on the southeastern edge of the Harz Mountains and the Sudetes in Poland have long been major mineral-producing areas in both countries.
