Toribeno

This area is located in Higashiyama Ward, Kyoto City, at the western foot of Higashiyama. It once referred to a wide area stretching from the current Gojozaka area to the Imakumano area. It has been known as a place of funerals since the mid-Heian period, and the cremation of Lady Aoi is recorded in The Tale of Genji. Before the early modern period, commoners did not have gravestones on their graves, but instead erected stupas, but since the early modern period, graveyards have been concentrated between Otani Honbyo (West Otani) and Kiyomizu-dera, and there are graves of Oshun and Denbei, who were famous for their joruri.

京都市東山(ひがしやま)区、東山西麓(せいろく)の地域。かつては現在の五条坂から今熊野(いまくまの)付近にかけての広い地区を称していた。平安中期ごろから葬送の地として知られ、『源氏物語』にも葵上(あおいのうえ)が荼毘(だび)に付されるようすを記している。近世以前は庶民の墓は墓石がなく、卒塔婆(そとば)を立てたが、近世以降は大谷本廟(ほんびょう)（西大谷）から清水(きよみず)寺にかけて墓地が集中し、浄瑠璃(じょうるり)で知られたお俊(しゅん)・伝兵衛(でんべえ)の墓などもある。
