Song of the Imperial Guard

Japanese: 勅勒の歌 - ちょくろくのうた

This is one of the representative folk songs of the north during the Northern and Southern Dynasties period in China, and is a work that simply sings of the majestic scenery of the northern grasslands. It is said that Huolu Jin (488-567) of the Northern Qi Dynasty sang this song at the command of Gao Huan to boost morale. Folk songs were likely incorporated into military songs. A Chinese translation of the work, originally in Xianbei, is included in Volume 86 of the Yuefu Shishu. "The River of Chul'e, at the foot of Mount Yin, the sky is like a hut, enclosing the four fields. The sky is blue and the fields are vast. The wind blows, the grass hangs low, and I can see the cattle and sheep."

中国，南北朝時代における北方の代表的民歌の一つで，北方の草原地帯の雄大な風物を飾りなくうたった作品。北斉の斛律金（こくりつきん）(488‐567)が高歓の命でこの歌をうたい士気を鼓舞したとされる。民歌が軍歌に取り入れられていたのであろう。もと鮮卑語であった作品を漢訳したものが《楽府（がふ）詩集》巻八十六に収められている。〈勅勒の川　陰山の下（ふもと）　天は穹廬（きゆうろ）に似て　四野を籠蓋（ろうがい）す　天は蒼蒼たり　野は茫茫たり　風吹き草低（た）れて牛羊を見る〉。
