[Died] June 2, 1974, London, England. British alpine skier and international authority on skiing. Full name Arnold Henry Moore Lunn. In 1922, he invented the slalom event, in which skiers must ski between pairs of gates on the course. As a boy, he was taught how to ski by his father. After entering Oxford University, he founded the Oxford Ski Club. He subsequently founded the British Ski Club (1903), the Alpine Ski Club (1908), and the Kandahar Ski Club (1924). In 1928, he started the Kandahar Races. In 1930, he persuaded the International Ski Federation (FIS) to recognize downhill and slalom as skiing events. In 1936, he helped organize the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Winter Olympics. He served as an official of the FIS (1934-49) and president of the International Downhill Skiing Committee (1946-49), and edited the British Ski Almanac for over 50 years from 1919. He wrote many books on skiing, mountaineering, philosophy, and Christianity. In 1952, he was knighted for his contributions to British skiing and to the friendship between Britain and Switzerland.

Laon

A commercial city located in the northeastern part of the Paris Basin, about 130 km northeast of Paris. The old town is on a hill about 100 meters higher than the surrounding area, and the famous cathedral built in the 12th and 13th centuries can be seen from afar. It is strategically important and was fortified by the ancient Romans. It was the religious and cultural center of the region throughout the Middle Ages, and was briefly the capital during the Carolingian dynasty. The new town is located at the foot of the hill and is home to thriving sugar, printing, and plastics industries. Many factories were relocated from Paris as a result of the decentralization policy. Population: 28,670 (1990).

A goddess in Norse mythology. Wife (daughter) of Egil, the god of the ocean. She would raise a barge, catch a ship with her hands and pull it into the sea, then catch drowned people with nets and welcome them as guests to her palace on the seabed. Although she was feared as a merciless goddess, it was believed that the drowned people who became her guests were given fine food and treated well.
