Toraku

Japanese: 斗落 - とらく

A method of expressing cultivated land area unique to Korea. It is a Chinese character transliteration of the Korean word majigi. One toraku refers to the area of cultivated land where one tou of seeds can be sown, and the absolute area varies depending on the location of the land (plains or mountains) and its fertility. It is mainly used to express the area of paddy fields, and became widespread after the Yi Dynasty. A method called "day cultivation" was also used, which expressed the area that one cow could cultivate in a day, mainly for farmland. According to a survey by a Japanese at the end of the Yi Dynasty, one toraku of paddy field was equivalent to 150 to 300 tsubo.

朝鮮独特の耕地面積表示法。朝鮮語マジギmajigiを漢字表記したもの。1斗落とは種子1斗をまく広さの耕地を指し，土地の所在(平野部か山間部か)や肥沃度により，その絶対面積は異なる。主として水田の面積表示に用いられ，李朝以後広く普及した。これとは別に畑地を中心として日耕とよばれる，牛1頭が1日に耕せる広さで表示する方法も用いられた。李朝末の日本人の調査によれば，水田1斗落は150坪から300坪に相当した。
