Kamigata literature

Japanese: 上方文学 - かみがたぶんがく
Kamigata literature
This refers to the townspeople literature that flourished mainly in the Kyoto and Osaka regions during the first half of the Edo period, reaching its peak in the Genroku era (1688-1704). It is the opposite of Edo literature. With the rise of the townspeople class, the introduction of printing technology, and an increase in the number of literate people, townspeople themselves became the main actors in literature, and their vivid realism and vitality marked a departure from previous eras in literature. Starting with emerging literature such as kana-zoshi, kojoruri, and Teimon haikai, Ihara Saikaku's ukiyo-zoshi, Chikamatsu Monzaemon and Takeda Izumo's joruri, Sakata Tojuro's kabuki, and Nishiyama Soin's danrin haikai flourished brilliantly.
