[Topography, Geology]
The total area of ​​the country is roughly equal to that of Hokkaido, and about two-thirds of it is made up of the Eastern Alps (the part of the Alps east of the line connecting the upper reaches of the Rhine River and Lake Como in Italy, which is also distinguished from the Western Alps in terms of geological structure). Together with the southeastern part of the Bohemian Forest, three-quarters of the country is mountainous. Hills, plateaus, and lowlands are developed in the southeastern and eastern foothills of the Alps, in the Vienna Basin, and in the alpine foreland between the Alps and the Danube River. In the Eastern Alps, the geological structure is reflected in the topography, and the Central Alpine Zone, which is mainly made up of crystalline rocks and schists, forms the central axis of the mountains, and on the north and south sides of this zone there are very prominent east-west structural longitudinal valleys.
