It refers to a place where ships call or anchor, and includes coastal topography, breakwaters and other facilities that protect against wind and waves, and even the entire port. Until the Middle Ages, it also appears in historical documents as "tsu-harbor." In ancient and medieval times, when ships sailed along the coast, port terminals were set up to wait for favorable winds and tides. The five ports (Kawajiri, Owada, Uozumi, Kan, and Muro), which are said to have been founded by Gyoki in the Nara period, were set up at intervals of one day's sailing distance by ship. At five ports, a tsu fee called shosai-ryo was collected for the maintenance of the breakwaters and iskura (stone fences). → Port / Port / Port town Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
