Yellow rice borer (Sanka moth)

Japanese: サンカメイガ(三化螟蛾) - サンカメイガ（英語表記）yellow rice borer

An insect of the Lepidoptera, Pyralidae family (illustration). Wingspan is about 2.5cm. It is a small moth with long, slender wings. Males have gray-brown forewings with scattered black-brown spots and small black markings and diagonal lines, while females have cream-colored forewings with larger black markings than males. The hind wings of males are also dark, while those of females are yellowish-white. The larvae are major pests that feed on rice stalks and cause damage. They are also called Sanka borerchus (three-colored borer) because they emerge three times a year (twice in some areas), and adults are also called Itten-ooomaga (one-ringed rice moth) because they have a single black mark on their forewings.

鱗翅目メイガ科の昆虫（イラスト）。翅の開張2.5cm内外。小型で翅の細長いガで，雄は前翅が灰褐色で，黒褐色点を散布し，小黒紋と斜線があり，雌の前翅はクリーム色で，雄より大きな黒紋がある。後翅も雄は暗色で，雌は黄白色。幼虫はイネの茎に食入し加害する大害虫で，年に3回(一部の地域では2回)発生するのでサンカメイチュウ(三化螟虫)とも呼ばれ，成虫は前翅に1個の黒紋のあるところからイッテンオオメイガとも呼ばれている。
