Born on December 5, 1850. He entered the Fukuoka Domain School Bunbukan, and later studied at Koshijuku, a private school run by Takaba Osamu. In 1875, he founded the Kyoshisha with Toyama Mitsuru and others. After being captured in the Hagi Rebellion, he founded the Koyosha (later the Genyosha) with Hakoda Rokusuke and others in 1879. After Hakoda's death, he became president. In 1906, he became a member of the House of Representatives (Constitutional Party). He passed away on May 11, 1925. He was 76 years old.
