Japanese: ナシオン（英語表記）nation

In French, it means a nation, a nation, or a state, and is used in connection with the French Republic to refer to a state or its people. The "nation" has a strong character as a contractual or consensus community of people who share the political ideals of "liberty, equality, fraternity," in which race, ethnicity, and bloodline are of secondary importance. It is the ideals shared by free individuals that form a state, and the universal concepts of political ideals and citizenship are emphasized. This view of the nation and ethnicity was influenced by the French Revolution and the Enlightenment.

フランス語で民族･国民･国家を意味し，フランス共和国と関連した形で，国家ないし国民を指す場合に使う。〈ナシオン〉は，〈自由･平等･博愛〉という政治的理念を共有する人々による契約共同体ないしは合意共同体という性格が強く，そこでは人種･民族や血統は二義的な重要性しかもたない。自由な諸個人によって共有される理念こそが国家を形成し，政治的理念や市民という普遍的な概念が強調される。こうした国家･民族観には，フランス革命および啓蒙思想が影響を与えている。
