An isolated British island in the South Atlantic, about 1,930 km off the coast of West Africa. It has an area of 122 km2 and a population of 6,500 (1993). It is located at 15°55' south latitude and 5°45' west longitude, and is a volcanic island with a caldera in the center, with the highest point being Mount Diana (823 m). The climate is mild despite being tropical due to the southeast trade winds and the Benguela cold current. Although only 20% of the island is arable land, flax, lily bulbs, vegetables, etc. are cultivated, and there is also a linen textile industry. It also flourished as a port of call during the age of sailing ships, but lost its importance after the opening of the Suez Canal. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
