An isolated British island in the South Atlantic, about 1,930 km off the coast of West Africa. It has an area of 122 km2 and a population of 6,500 (1993). It is located at 15°55' south latitude and 5°45' west longitude, and is a volcanic island with a caldera in the center, with the highest point being Mount Diana (823 m). The climate is mild despite being tropical due to the southeast trade winds and the Benguela cold current. Although only 20% of the island is arable land, flax, lily bulbs, vegetables, etc. are cultivated, and there is also a linen textile industry. It also flourished as a port of call during the age of sailing ships, but lost its importance after the opening of the Suez Canal.

西アフリカ沖約1930kmの南大西洋上にあるイギリス領の孤島。面積122km2，人口6500(1993)。南緯15゜55′，西経5゜45′に位置し，中央にカルデラを有する火山島で最高点はダイアナ峰(823m)である。気候は南東貿易風とベンゲラ寒流のため，熱帯にもかかわらず温和。可耕地は島の20％にすぎないが，亜麻を中心にユリの球根，野菜などが栽培され，麻織物工業も立地する。また帆船時代には寄航地として栄えたが，スエズ運河開通後は重要性を失った。
