A village in Kunigami County, Okinawa Prefecture, on the west coast of the northern part of Okinawa Island (the main island). Population 3,437 (1995). An uplifted sea-cut terrace, dissected from the mountainous backbone in the north, approaches the sea, and there is an alluvial lowland along the coast and the shores of Shioya Bay. The plateau is covered with forest, which accounts for 70% of the village area, but in recent years development on the plateau has been promoted, and arable land has expanded, with the cultivation of shiikuwasha, mandarin oranges, and other fruit trees, flowers, and sugarcane. Pig farming is also popular. Since before World War II, there have been many migrant workers, and the village is known as Ogimi carpenters.
