Cassiopeia - Cassiopeia

A constellation that rises high in the northern sky on autumn evenings. Its W-shaped arrangement of five stars makes it instantly recognizable. It hangs in the northern sky around the time the Big Dipper drops low over the northern horizon, making it a good landmark for finding the North Star. Cassiopeia is a queen of the ancient Ethiopian kingdom who appears in Greek mythology. She bragged too much about the beauty of her daughter Andromeda, and also about her own beauty, which angered the sea god, forcing her to sacrifice Andromeda to the sea demon. The W-shape represents Cassiopeia sitting on a chair.

In Japan, it has long been known as the "Anchor Star" and the "Mountain Star" (Oita region). It is located in the autumn Milky Way and contains many open clusters such as M52 and NGC7789 that can be enjoyed with binoculars or small telescopes.

秋の宵に北の空高く昇る星座。W字形に5個の星が並んでいる姿はひと目でそれとわかる。北斗七星が北の地平線低く下がるころ北の空にかかるので、北極星をみつけるためのよい目印になる。カシオペヤ（カッシオペイア）は、ギリシア神話に登場する古代エチオピア王国の王妃で、娘アンドロメダの美しさ、または自身の美しさを自慢しすぎたため海神の怒りを買い、アンドロメダを海魔のいけにえに捧(ささ)げなければならなくなってしまう。W字はそのカシオペヤの椅子(いす)に腰かけた姿を表したものである。

　日本では古くから「いかり星（錨星）」、「山がた星」（大分地方）などの名で親しまれていた。秋の天の川の中にあり、双眼鏡や小望遠鏡で楽しめるM52やNGC7789などの散開星団をたくさん含んでいる。
