Tovstonogov (Georgiy Aleksandrovich Tovstonogov)

Soviet director. Born in Tbilisi, Georgia, his mother is Georgian. In 1931 he became an actor and assistant director at the Russian Youth Theatre, and in 1938 graduated from Moscow's State University of Dramatic Arts. While working in small and medium-sized theatres around the country, he distinguished himself as a director, and in 1956 he became the chief director of the Bolshoi Drama Theatre (abbreviated as BDT/BDT) in Leningrad. In 1958 he was the first director to receive the Lenin Prize for his direction of Vishnevsky's "The Optimistic Tragedy" (1955). While inheriting the legacy of Stanislavsky, he attracted attention for his bold and diverse direction that emphasized modernity, and he nurtured many excellent actors. He visited Japan with his theatre company in 1983 and 1988.

ソ連の演出家。母親がジョージア(グルジア)人で、ジョージアのトビリシに生まれる。1931年からロシア青少年劇場の俳優兼演出助手になり、1938年モスクワの国立演劇大学を卒業。各地の中小劇団で働くうちに演出家として頭角を現し、1956年にレニングラードのボリショイ・ドラマ劇場(略称БДТ/BDT)主任演出家となる。ビシネフスキーの『楽天的悲劇』の演出(1955)で、1958年演出家として初めてレーニン賞を受賞。スタニスラフスキーの遺産を継承しながら、現代性を強調する大胆で多彩な演出で注目され、多くの優れた俳優を育てた。1983年(昭和58)と1988年に劇団を率いて来日した。
