A freshwater bivalve mollusks of the Unionidae family (illustration). The shell is 13 cm long, 8 cm high, and 5 cm wide. It is oval and thin, and easily cracks when dry. The apex of the shell bulges slightly forward. The anterior end is rounded, the dorsal margin is straight, and it tapers slightly at the posterior, but the posterior end is also rounded. When young, the surface is yellowish-green with radial color bands, but as it matures, it becomes blackish. The inner surface has a strong pearlescent luster. There are no teeth that interlock the left and right shells, and the mantle membrane line that connects the front and rear adductor muscles is not indented.

イシガイ科の淡水産二枚貝（イラスト）。殻の長さ13cm，高さ8cm，幅5cmに達する。楕円形で薄く，乾燥すると割れやすい。殻頂はやや前方に寄り膨らむ。前端は丸く，背縁はまっすぐで，後方で少し細くなるが後端も丸い。表面は幼貝のときは黄緑色で放射状な色帯ができるが，成長すると黒みを帯びる。内面は強い真珠光沢がある。左右両殻のかみ合せの歯はまったくなく，前後にある貝柱のあとを結ぶ外套（がいとう）膜線は湾入しない。
