A phenomenon that occurs in the stratosphere in the upper atmosphere. In high latitudes, temperatures rise suddenly from late winter to spring, sometimes rising by 40K in a few days, and is also called sudden stratospheric warming. During seasonal warming, high latitudes are hotter than equatorial regions. This phenomenon does not occur during the transition from summer to winter. It was discovered in 1952 by R. Sherhag of Germany. [Masaji Ota] [Reference] |Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
