1778‐1853 A painter from the Qing Dynasty in China. His pen name was Ruoyi and his pen name was Yusheng. In his later years he went by the name Hituou. He was from Wujin, Jiangsu Province (now Changzhou). In 1853 (the third year of the Xianfeng era), he died during the attack by the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom army and was given the posthumous name of Zhenmin. He studied astronomy, geography, and the various disciplines, and excelled in the arts of playing the zither, swordplay, and flute playing. He was skilled in calligraphy, painting, poetry, and prose. In calligraphy and painting, he imitated Dong Qichang, and his paintings of flowers and plum blossoms exuded a high level of elegance, while his paintings of pines and cypresses had a clumsy, old-fashioned quality.
